The antiwar/ anti-military sentiment was strong on college campuses, and most professors were unsympathetic to the corps students' situation (for example, rats weren't given much free time for studying). That was quite unlike my father-in-law's experience in the VT corps of cadets, class of 1941. Every able-bodied student on campus was in the corps; professors were used to that. Then, too, they were also part of the "greatest generation," and his class was graduated early so they could go fight in the army. On the other hand, soldiers in the '70s were often disrespected and cursed at—even those who were drafted and had no say in the matter. My father-in-law could never appreciate the ways that his son's experience in the corps was so unlike his own, which he remembered fondly. Different times.
